Aaron Draplin
Guardian of grassroots design, using bold lines and heavy type to resist the coldness of elite design
Aaron Draplin is one of America's most recognizable independent graphic designers, known for his signature bold lines, high-saturation colors, and deep reinvestigation of American folk industrial design traditions. His Draplin Design Co. (DDC) is one of the most influential independent studios in American design circles. His design philosophy is rooted in working-class values: design should be useful, solid, and direct—it doesn't need an elite, high-and-mighty attitude. Field Notes, the notebook brand he co-founded with Jim Coudal, transformed the rustic aesthetic of American agricultural cooperative handbooks into a contemporary stationery design classic. Through extensive lectures, online courses, and transparent sharing in the Design Is a Job style, he has become the spiritual leader of the designer grassroots movement.
