President who united America and abolished slavery through moral will and political genius
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States, born in frontier poverty in Kentucky and largely self-educated. He became a lawyer and politician and led the Union through the Civil War (1861-1865), issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 to begin the abolition of slavery.
