Chen Tianqiao
Pioneer of Chinese online gaming who transformed from creator of Legend to brain science philanthropy explorer
Chen Tianqiao was born in 1973 in Zhejiang Province. He founded Shengda Networks in 1999 and obtained exclusive Chinese operating rights for the Korean game Legend in 2001, building it into China's first online game with tens of millions of simultaneous users and pioneering the commercialization era of Chinese online gaming. He subsequently drove Shengda's transformation toward content ecosystem integration, acquiring Qidian Chinese Literature and Shengda Literature. In recent years, Chen Tianqiao and his wife Chrissy Luo have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Caltech and other institutions for brain science research, becoming one of the world's most important brain science philanthropists.
Methodologies
- Licensing Operation First-Mover Strategy - In the early stages of emerging markets, quickly establish market leadership through low-cost licensing of validated external IPs, avoiding self-development risks.
- Content Ecosystem Integration Strategy - Build a content ecosystem of mutual traffic and mutual reinforcement by integrating multiple complementary content forms, achieving platform value beyond single products.

Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Chen Tianqiao believed that the long-term competitive advantage of internet platforms comes from content ecosystems rather than single products. Games are just one form of content; what is truly valuable is a content ecosystem that can continuously generate user stickiness. This belief drove his integration of content assets like Shengda Literature and Qidian Chinese Literature.
- Belief 2 - The core of Chen Tianqiao's business strategy was evolving from a single gaming product to a comprehensive entertainment platform, then to a content ecosystem. He believed that true business value lies in building an ecosystem where various content forms can flourish, rather than relying on a single hit product.
- Belief 3 - After commercial success, Chen Tianqiao turned to brain science philanthropy, believing that many of humanity's most profound problems, from mental illness to cognitive disorders, are rooted in a lack of understanding of brain mechanisms. By funding basic brain science research, the foundation can be laid for medical breakthroughs in the coming decades.
