Founder of Confucianism who reshaped human civilization through benevolence, righteousness, ritual, and wisdom
Confucius (551-479 BC), born Kong Qiu in the state of Lu, was China's greatest thinker and educator and the founder of Confucianism. He built a comprehensive system centered on ren (benevolence) encompassing ethics, politics, education, and personal cultivation. His teachings were compiled by disciples into the Analects, which became the spiritual backbone of East Asian civilization for two thousand years.
Ren (benevolence, love) is the core of Confucius's thought - the fundamental moral attitude between people, summarized as 'the person of ren loves others.' All other virtues - ritual propriety, righteousness, loyalty, faithfulness - flow from ren.

If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things; if language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be accomplished. Conceptual clarity is the prerequisite for all moral and political action.

Begin with love for family, then expand outward to neighbors, community, state, and all under heaven - the path of cultivating ren.
When asked about ren, Confucius gave different answers to different disciples: to Yan Hui 'master yourself and return to ritual'; to Fan Chi 'love others'; to Zhonggong 'do not impose on others what you yourself do not want.' The core is love expanding outward.
Do not impose on others what you yourself do not want - the supreme principle of human relationships, derived by self-reflection.
Zigong asked: 'Is there one word which can serve as a rule of practice for all one's life?' The Master said, 'Is not Shu such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.' Recognized as equivalent to the Western Golden Rule.
Personal self-cultivation is the starting point for all social change; virtue propagates from inside out and cannot skip levels.
The Great Learning explicitly articulates this hierarchy: investigate things, extend knowledge, make will sincere, rectify mind, cultivate self, regulate family, govern state, bring peace to all under heaven.
Confucius was dedicated to social reform yet aimed to restore Zhou dynasty ritual - a radical reformer using conservative, restorationist means.
Confucius encouraged disciples to question and probe, yet emphasized deference to parents and rulers - later Confucianism developed this into a tool for suppressing dissent.
Mastering ritual and music; early official career in Lu
Confucius was a devoted learner from childhood, mastering Zhou dynasty rituals and music. By his 30s he began accepting disciples and establishing the tradition of private scholarly instruction.
Served as Grand Master of Justice in Lu; implemented virtue-based governance; left Lu after political setback
At around 51, Confucius became magistrate of Zhongdu, then rose to Grand Master of Justice, implementing reforms. Political struggles and the ruler's neglect of duties led him to resign and leave Lu.
Traveled through Wei, Chen, Cai and other states propagating benevolent governance; remained unrealized politically
Confucius traveled through several states for about 14 years with his disciples, attempting to put benevolent governance into practice. Repeatedly rejected and endangered, he never wavered.
Compiling the Six Classics, teaching, and nurturing disciples
After returning to Lu at 68, Confucius devoted himself to compiling classical texts (the Six Classics) and teaching. He had three thousand disciples and seventy-two exemplary students.
Context: The Spring and Autumn period: the Zhou royal house in decline, states in conflict, ritual and music collapsing.
Decision: Born into modest circumstances, Confucius was committed to learning from childhood.
