Confucius
Founder of Confucianism who reshaped human civilization through benevolence, righteousness, ritual, and wisdom
Confucius (551-479 BC), born Kong Qiu in the state of Lu, was China's greatest thinker and educator and the founder of Confucianism. He built a comprehensive system centered on ren (benevolence) encompassing ethics, politics, education, and personal cultivation. His teachings were compiled by disciples into the Analects, which became the spiritual backbone of East Asian civilization for two thousand years.
Methodologies
- Ren and Shu Practice Method - Make ren actionable through the daily self-check of 'do not impose on others what you yourself do not want.'
- Junzi Self-Cultivation Pathway - Systematically cultivate the junzi character through the progressive steps of investigating things, extending knowledge, making the will sincere, rectifying the mind, and cultivating the self.
Key decisions and timeline

Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Ren (benevolence, love) is the core of Confucius's thought - the fundamental moral attitude between people, summarized as 'the person of ren loves others.' All other virtues - ritual propriety, righteousness, loyalty, faithfulness - flow from ren.
- Belief 2 - Li is not merely ceremonial rules but the structural framework of social relationships - the five relationships each governed by proper conduct. Mastering oneself to return to li is the path to ideal social order.
- Belief 3 - Junzi is not a hereditary title but a moral attainment - continuous self-cultivation, introspection, and leading by moral example. Anyone willing to study and practice can become a junzi.
