E.O. Wilson
Biodiversity guardian and sociobiology founder who decoded the web of life through ants
Edward Osborne Wilson (1929-2021) was an American biologist, naturalist, and author, professor of entomology at Harvard University, known as the 'father of ants' and 'father of biodiversity.' Building on ant research, he founded sociobiology, arguing that all social behavior including human behavior has evolutionary roots. His Sociobiology (1975) sparked one of the most intense scientific controversies of the 20th century. His 1998 Consilience proposed a cross-disciplinary framework for the unification of knowledge. In his later years he proposed the Half-Earth plan, advocating that 50% of Earth's land and oceans be designated as nature reserves to halt species extinction. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice, one of the few scholars in the history of science to reach the pinnacle in all three dimensions of basic research, theoretical construction, and public advocacy.
