Eliyahu M. Goldratt
Management revolutionary who transformed factory management with a physicist's systems thinking, inventing the Theory of Constraints
Eliyahu M. Goldratt (1947-2011) was an Israeli physicist and management thinker, founder of the Theory of Constraints (TOC). Born in Israel in 1947, he earned a physics doctorate from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. In the 1970s, he brought physics-based systems analysis methods into factory management, developing the Optimized Production Technology (OPT) software. His 1984 management novel The Goal used a fictional story to expound TOC's core idea: every system is constrained by a bottleneck, and the only way to increase the system's overall throughput is to identify and eliminate the bottleneck. The book became a management classic selling over 7 million copies worldwide, listed by Time magazine as one of the '25 Most Influential Business Management Books.' Goldratt later expanded TOC to supply chain (replenishment model), project management (Critical Chain method), sales, and strategy, and developed the Thinking Processes tools. He died of lung cancer on June 11, 2011, at age 63, leaving an intellectual legacy that has transformed global manufacturing and project management practices.

Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Goldratt's core insight: just as a chain's strength is determined by its weakest link, any system's (factory, company, project) output is determined by its weakest constraint (bottleneck). Investing resources and optimization effort outside the bottleneck is waste from a systems perspective. Meaningful improvement only happens at the constraint point.
- Belief 2 - Traditional management focuses on reducing costs and improving local efficiency; Goldratt considered this the wrong framework. The right focus is 'throughput' (the rate at which the system generates money through sales), while minimizing 'inventory' and 'operating expenses.' These three metrics (T/I/OE) are the correct framework for evaluating any management decision.
