Emad Mostaque
The open-source evangelist who treated generative AI as a public good
Emad Mostaque is a British-Bangladeshi entrepreneur and former hedge fund manager with a mathematics background who founded Stability AI in 2019. In August 2022, Stability AI funded and released Stable Diffusion, an open-source text-to-image model that let anyone generate high-quality images on consumer GPUs, a landmark moment for the open-source generative-AI wave. Mostaque raised capital rapidly on the narrative of 'AI as a public good, models owned by everyone,' closing a $101M round at roughly a $1B valuation in October 2022. However, between 2023 and 2024, investigations by Forbes and others questioned his exaggerated credentials and overstated personal role in creating Stable Diffusion (the core research was done by LMU Munich's CompVis group and Runway), and reported financial strain and departures of key researchers. In March 2024 he resigned as CEO of Stability AI, arguing that one cannot beat centralized AI with more centralized AI, and turned toward decentralized AI, later founding Schelling AI / Intelligent Internet and authoring 'The Last Economy.' His story embodies both the idealism of open-source AI and a cautionary case of the gap between narrative, valuation, and execution during the AI boom.
