Franklin D. Roosevelt
The 32nd President of the United States, who changed the course of American and world history through the New Deal Hundred Days legislation, Fireside Chats, and wartime alliance building
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) was the 32nd President of the United States and the only president in American history to serve four terms. When he took office in 1933, America was at the most severe moment of the Great Depression: unemployment was at 25%, thousands of banks had failed, and social unrest was approaching a breaking point. Roosevelt launched the Hundred Days New Deal, pushing through 15 major pieces of legislation in 100 days and establishing the modern American social safety net (Social Security Act, Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, etc.). He pioneered the Fireside Chat radio format, using accessible language to communicate directly with the American people and rebuild public confidence in government. During World War II, he led the construction of the anti-fascist alliance, building wartime cooperative relationships with Churchill and Stalin that laid the foundation for the postwar world order. Leading America through the two most severe crises in human history while living with polio, he is widely considered one of the greatest presidents in American history.
