Gerd Gigerenzer is a German cognitive psychologist who led research at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich from 1995 to 1997 and then served for many years as director of the Center for Adaptive Behavior and Cognition at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, becoming director emeritus after retiring in 2017. He currently directs the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam's Faculty of Health Sciences. His work on bounded and ecological rationality argues that the performance of a heuristic depends on how well it matches the structure of its environment: simple rules can outperform more complex methods in some uncertain settings, but intuition is not uniformly reliable. His books have influenced risk communication and decision practice in medicine, law, finance, and public policy.
