Greg Brockman
OpenAI co-founder who redefined technical leadership for the AI era, evolving from top engineer to organizational architect
Greg Brockman co-founded OpenAI and serves as its President. He dropped out of Harvard mathematics to join Stripe as CTO (2010-2015), helping scale it from 2 to 250 people. In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, and others, initially serving as CTO before transitioning to President. He was a key executor behind ChatGPT's launch and GPT-4's release, and a primary shaper of OpenAI's engineering culture. During the November 2023 board crisis when Altman was fired, Brockman was the first to announce resignation in solidarity, later returning with Altman.
Methodologies
- Technical Leader Proactive Role Evolution - As the organization grows, technical founders should proactively identify the capabilities the organization most needs and evolve toward them, rather than guarding initial technical roles.
- Cross-Domain Technical Active Learning - When needing to master a new technical domain, systematically relearn as a beginner, document the process publicly, while maintaining high quality standards.
Key decisions and timeline
- 2010 Dropped Out of Harvard to Join Stripe - For top technical talent, early-stage startup growth speed often far exceeds traditional career paths.
- 2015-12 Co-Founded OpenAI, Served as Inaugural CTO - When a technology domain's development trajectory is clear and far-reaching, mission-driven early joining is often more worthwhile than compensation optimization.
- 2019 Publicly Documented Self-Teaching Machine Learning, Becoming a Technical Leadership Role Model - Technical leaders' public learning behaviors shape organizational learning culture more effectively than internal training.
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - In AI research environments with enormous technical uncertainty and external pressure, a clear and genuine sense of mission retains top talent more effectively than compensation and benefits.
- Belief 2 - Brockman believes technical leaders' core competitiveness comes from continued hands-on engagement with underlying technology; managers who lose technical intuition cannot make correct product and research direction decisions.
- Belief 3 - One of OpenAI's core beliefs: only organizations at the AGI development frontier have the standing to influence safety standards; pure safety research disconnected from capability development cannot produce genuinely effective safety measures.
