Huang Zheng
The contrarian entrepreneur who used social viral mechanics to build Pinduoduo beyond China's first-tier cities, then rewrote e-commerce logic around consumer rights
Huang Zheng was born in 1980 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. After graduating from Zhejiang University's Computer Science department, he pursued graduate studies in the US and received a master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined Google in 2006, where he met Ding Lei and Duan Yongping, being deeply influenced by Duan's benfun (principled conduct) philosophy. After returning to China in 2007, he founded the cross-border e-commerce company Ouku.com and a gaming company. In 2015 he launched Pinhaohuo, merged it into Pinduoduo in 2016, and used WeChat social virality and group-buy pricing to enter the market. Within three years Pinduoduo's user count surpassed 400 million, and it listed on Nasdaq in 2018. Pinduoduo's core model — Costco (extreme value-for-money) plus Disney (gamified shopping experience) — disrupted the search-based logic of traditional e-commerce. In 2021, Huang Zheng resigned as CEO to focus on fundamental research in food science and life sciences.
