Justice as Fairness: The Basic Structure of Society Must Withstand the Veil of Ignorance
Whether a society's basic institutional structure is just should be tested through the 'veil of ignorance' thought experiment: if people would still accept an institutional arrangement without knowing their social position, then that arrangement is just. This thought experiment eliminates personal bias and forces people to think about justice from a universal perspective.
