Konosuke Matsushita
Practitioner of the tap water philosophy, who saw affordable abundance as the highest commercial mission
Konosuke Matsushita (1894-1989) was the founder of Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic), revered as the 'God of Japanese Management.' He dropped out of school at age 9 due to family poverty, became a bicycle shop apprentice, and started his own business at 23. His core management philosophy is the 'tap water philosophy': products should be as cheap and abundant as tap water, affordable to everyone. He also proposed 'dam-style management' — maintaining ample financial and talent reserves to weather economic fluctuations — and 'human-centered management' — employees are the most important asset. His PHP Institute and Matsushita School of Government and Management influenced generations of Japanese entrepreneurs and politicians.
Methodologies
- Tap Water Pricing Method - Make 'accessible to all' the pricing target, forcing cost innovation
- Dam Reserve Building Method - Systematically accumulate excess reserves during prosperity, providing the foundation for no-layoff decisions during crises
Key decisions and timeline
- Born in Wakayama Prefecture - Adversity is the best teacher
- Dropped out at age 9 to become a bicycle shop apprentice - Those without formal education need to accumulate wisdom through practice
- Joined Osaka Electric Light Company - Identifying era trends and proactively entering them is more important than staying in familiar territory
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Products should be as cheap and abundant as tap water, affordable to everyone. Eliminating material poverty is the social mission of enterprise; profit is a tool to achieve the mission, not an end in itself.
- Belief 2 - A company should maintain ample reserves of capital, talent, and technology like a dam stores water — accumulate during prosperity, draw on reserves during downturns to smooth out business fluctuations.
- Belief 3 - Employees are the most important asset of an enterprise. The primary responsibility of management is to create an environment where employees can develop their potential. A company is a collection of people; the growth of people is the growth of the company.
