Founder of Taoism who redefined humanity's relationship with the cosmos through wu wei and natural spontaneity
Lao Tzu (c. 571-471 BC), also known as Li Er, was the archivist of the Zhou dynasty and founder of Taoism. His masterwork, the Tao Te Ching (roughly 5,000 Chinese characters), is one of the most profound philosophical texts in Chinese cultural history. He conceived the Tao as the fundamental principle of the cosmos, proposed wu wei (non-action) as the basis for governance, and articulated paradoxes such as soft overcoming hard that continue to resonate globally.
The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. The Tao is the origin prior to heaven and earth - it cannot be fully spoken or defined, only experienced and followed. Any attempt to fully name or fix it loses the real Tao.

Wu wei is not inaction but the absence of forced or unnatural action - acting in accordance with the natural order and the inherent nature of things. Through daily diminishment of artificial striving, one reaches wu wei; through wu wei, nothing is left undone.

Humans follow earth, earth follows heaven, heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows ziran (what is naturally so). All things have their inner rhythm; forced intervention disrupts it. The best governance, education, and leadership allow things to unfold according to their own nature.

The best leader makes followers feel they accomplished things themselves - achieve goals by creating conditions rather than through direct intervention.
Lao Tzu said: the best ruler is one of whom the people are barely aware; next best is one whom they love and praise; next is one they fear; worst is one they despise. When the best leader's work is done, people say: We did it ourselves.
When things reach extremes, they inevitably reverse to their opposite; anticipating this reversal and moving with it is the highest level of strategic thinking.
Fortune and misfortune depend on each other; yield and you will overcome; bend and you will be straight; empty and you will be full; worn and you will be renewed. Every apparently negative state contains the seed of its positive opposite.
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing oneself is enlightenment. Conquering others requires force; conquering oneself requires strength. True wisdom is not knowing more but understanding one's own limits.
Lao Tzu emphasized contentment: those who know they have enough are wealthy; those who persevere have will; those who know contentment are rich. Rather than pursuing more knowledge or power, deepen understanding of oneself and the Tao - this is Lao Tzu's path of wisdom.
Lao Tzu says both wu wei and 'through wu wei nothing is left undone' - by not forcing anything, everything is naturally accomplished. This paradox is the deepest core of Taoist philosophy.
Knowing you don't know is highest wisdom; thinking you know when you don't is sickness. The wise acknowledge ignorance; this is superior to false certainty.
