Liang Ning
Evangelist who redefined Chinese product manager thinking with emotional frameworks and product empathy
Liang Ning is one of the most influential product thinking evangelists in China's internet industry. She served as a product advisor to Tencent and other institutions. In 2017, she launched 30 Lectures on Product Thinking on the Dedao app, which quickly became a required course for Chinese product managers, accumulating hundreds of thousands of students. Liang Ning's core contribution is elevating user experience from the functional level to the emotional and human level: she proposed using pleasure and fear to understand user behavior, the dot-line-plane-body framework to analyze the structural layers of business opportunities, and defined the essence of a product manager's work as creating certainty for users. Her ideas profoundly influenced the foundational cognitive frameworks of a generation of Chinese product professionals.
Methodologies
- Emotion-Driven Design Method - In product design, prioritize identifying and responding to users' core emotions rather than merely meeting functional requirements.
- Dot-Line-Plane-Body Opportunity Level Analysis - Use the four-level structure to judge the value density and competitive barriers of business opportunities, avoiding excessive competition at low-value levels.
Key decisions and timeline
- Joined Tencent, Beginning Internet Product Career - Large-scale user products are the best training ground for product thinking
- Witnessed WeChat's Rise, Deepening Mobile Product Understanding - Truly great products are a deep understanding of human nature, not a pile of technology
- Launched Product Thinking Course at Hupan University - Good thinking frameworks are more valuable than specific methods because frameworks can be transferred to different scenarios
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - All user behavior is driven by emotion. Pleasure keeps users engaged; fear drives users to act. Truly understanding users is not analyzing what they say, but feeling when they experience pleasure and when they feel fear and insecurity. The essence of product design is emotional design.
- Belief 2 - Users use products to gain certainty in an uncertain world: certain outcomes, certain experiences, certain security. The core task of a product manager is to identify users' uncertainty anxiety and convert it into certainty commitments through product design.
- Belief 3 - Product managers cannot rely only on logic and data; they must be able to genuinely feel the user's situation and emotions. Empathy is not sympathy but the ability to temporarily become that user and experience their real feelings in specific scenarios. Product people without empathy can only stack features and cannot create products that truly move people.
