Luo Yonghao
From English teacher to smartphone geek to live-stream e-commerce pioneer, using debt-repayment spirit and geek passion to define another possibility for Chinese entrepreneurs
Luo Yonghao was born in 1972 in Yanbian, Jilin. Without a college degree, he became a top-tier instructor at New Oriental English training, accumulating a massive fan base through sharp commentary and distinctive personal charisma. He founded Bullog in 2006, then Smartisan in 2012, developing Android smartphones with "craftsman spirit." Smartisan phones earned cult following among geeks for their distinctive design aesthetics and system interaction innovations, but the company fell into difficulty due to insufficient manufacturing and supply chain management capabilities, being acquired by ByteDance in 2019. With approximately 600 million yuan in debt, Luo started live-stream e-commerce in 2019 with "debt repayment" as his theme, becoming one of the earliest and most successful live commerce streamers on Douyin, announcing in 2022 that all debts were repaid. Through a highly personalized narrative approach, he deeply bound his personal brand with commercial value, becoming a unique "entrepreneurial persona symbol" in Chinese internet culture.
