Internet pioneer who redefined tech investment logic with the "software is eating the world" prophecy
Marc Andreessen co-developed Mosaic—the first graphical web browser—while at the University of Illinois, then co-founded Netscape and completed the most influential IPO in internet history (1995). Before finding Product-Market Fit, nothing matters. After finding it, nothing matters as long as you do not screw it up. PMF is defined as: a product in a good market that can satisfy that market's needs. The measure is user retention and word-of-mouth growth, not funding amount or media coverage.

In software-driven markets, network effects (each additional user increases the product's value for all existing users) are the most difficult competitive barrier to replicate. Companies with network effects tend to form winner-take-all market structures—this is one of the core screening criteria in a16z's investment decisions.

PMF is not something you declare; the market tells you: users come uninvited, press chases you, sales cannot keep up with demand.
Netscape browser surpassed 10 million downloads within 16 months of release with no advertising—a PMF signal Andreessen experienced firsthand. Airbnb's rapid post-COVID recovery also proved the existence of PMF.
When an industry's value chain migrates from the physical layer to the software layer, the existing competitive landscape resets—software companies will defeat traditional industry leaders at lower marginal cost.
