Max Tegmark
MIT cosmologist and AI governance pioneer who framed AI safety in physics language and co-founded the Future of Life Institute
Max Tegmark is a physics professor at MIT specializing in cosmology and AI safety. He co-founded the Future of Life Institute (FLI) with Jaan Tallinn and others in 2014, organized the first AI safety open letter in 2015 (signed by Hawking, Musk and others), and launched the 2023 open letter calling for a pause in AGI development (signed by 27,000 people). His Life 3.0 (2017) is one of the most widely read popular books in AI safety, exploring AI's impact on the nature of life from a physics perspective. He also proposed the 'Mathematical Universe Hypothesis': the foundation of reality is mathematical structure, consistent with his information-theoretic views on consciousness and AI.

Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Tegmark believes the essence of life (including consciousness) is information processing patterns, not the physical substrate implementing that processing (whether carbon-based or silicon-based doesn't matter). This means AI can in principle host 'life forms' equivalent to humans, and also that the consequences of AI surpassing humans are far more profound than machines replacing labor.
