Mike Krieger
Instagram co-founder who distilled complexity into simplicity, now steering product at Anthropic
Michel Krieger, born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1986, moved to California in 2004 to study symbolic systems at Stanford. In 2010 he co-founded Instagram with Kevin Systrom as CTO, leading nearly all early engineering and UX, pivoting the product from a check-in concept to photo-only sharing, and after Facebook's ~$1B acquisition in 2012, scaling the engineering org past 450 people and monthly active users from millions to one billion. In 2018 he and Systrom resigned from Instagram, saying they wanted to 'explore our curiosity and creativity again.' They later launched the COVID tracker Rt.live (2020) and the AI news app Artifact (2023), which shut down in early 2024. In May 2024 Krieger joined Anthropic as Chief Product Officer, overseeing product engineering, design, and management for Claude's enterprise applications; in January 2026 he joined Anthropic's Labs team. His career arc embodies the leap from minimalist consumer products to large-scale, responsible AI product leadership.
