Tech entrepreneur and national-scale systems architect who built digital identity infrastructure for 1.2 billion Indians
Nilekani is one of India's most influential tech entrepreneurs and the designer of the world's largest digital identity system. As co-founder of Infosys, he helped establish the foundation of India's IT outsourcing industry. In 2009, he abandoned commercial success to lead the design and implementation of Aadhaar, a biometric digital identity system covering 1.2 billion Indians, becoming the world's largest digital public infrastructure project. His book Imagining India provides a macro framework for India's modernization, while the open architecture design of IndiaStack has become a reference template for other countries' digital transformation.
Nilekani believed that the lack of verifiable digital identity was the fundamental barrier preventing India's poor from accessing government services and financial services. The core logic of Aadhaar is: solve the identity problem first, then everything else can be solved.

Nilekani insisted on open API principles when designing IndiaStack, making Aadhaar, UPI, etc. public infrastructure accessible to all developers rather than closed government-monopolized systems. This choice caused India's fintech ecosystem to explode in growth within five years.

The core argument of Imagining India is that many reform ideas for India have long existed, but they can only be implemented when social, technological, and political conditions mature simultaneously. The leader's task is to recognize which ideas' time has come.

When designing Aadhaar, Nilekani rejected the traditional path of small-scale piloting before expansion, instead designing the architecture from the start for 1.2 billion people. He believed that systems designed for small scale are difficult to truly scale to large scale.
