Su Hua
Kuaishou co-founder who democratized algorithms to empower ordinary people in lower-tier markets as content creators
Su Hua (born 1985) is the co-founder and CEO of Kuaishou Technology, a Tsinghua University computer science graduate who previously worked as an engineer at Google China. In 2011, he co-founded Kuaishou (originally GIF Kuaishou) with Cheng Yixiao, transforming it from a GIF creation tool into a short video social platform. Su Hua's core philosophy is algorithm democratization — unlike Douyin's centralized traffic distribution, Kuaishou's algorithm is dedicated to giving every ordinary user a fair chance at exposure, rather than concentrating traffic among a few top creators. This philosophy gave Kuaishou a deep user base in lower-tier markets (third, fourth, and fifth-tier cities and rural areas), making it one of China's largest short video platforms. Kuaishou went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2021, with a market cap that once exceeded $170 billion.
Methodologies
- Decentralized Algorithm Design Principles - In platform algorithm design, actively combat the Matthew effect, giving long-tail creators fair exposure opportunities
- Inclusive Product Design Framework - When designing products, treat lower-tier market users' needs and usage habits as core design constraints, not afterthoughts
Key decisions and timeline
- Born in Hunan, Grew Up in an Ordinary Family - Growing up in an ordinary family is the best source for understanding lower-tier market user needs
- Joined Google China, Researched Recommendation Algorithms - Learning the best technology at the best companies is the most important early investment for tech entrepreneurs
- Joined Cheng Yixiao's GIF Kuaishou as Co-founder - Joining the right startup at the right time can create more personal value than staying at a large company
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Traditional recommendation algorithms tend to concentrate traffic on already-successful creators, creating a Matthew effect. Su Hua believes algorithms should give everyone a fair chance, including farmers, craftspeople, and ordinary workers in third and fourth-tier cities. Kuaishou's algorithm design principle: even creators with very few followers should have the chance to be seen by strangers.
- Belief 2 - Kuaishou's mission is to record and spread the world's diverse lifestyles. Not just the refined lives of urban white-collar workers, but also rural sunrises and sunsets, factory workers' labor, and ethnic minority traditional cultures. Su Hua believes these lives ignored by mainstream media are equally valuable and equally deserving of being recorded and shared.
- Belief 3 - Su Hua believes good technology can help people build genuine community connections, not just consume content. Many Kuaishou users are not just viewers but genuine community members who participate in interactions. The value of technology lies in lowering the barriers to human connection, not creating false prosperity.
