Susan Wojcicki was born in 1968 in Santa Clara, California, with a Stanford physics professor father and teacher mother. In 1998, she rented her garage to Larry Page and Sergey Brin as Google's first office, then became Google's 16th employee and first marketing director. At Google, she drove products like Google Images and Google Video, and led the strategic decision to acquire YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006. In 2014, she became YouTube CEO, expanding monthly active users from 1 billion to 2 billion, building an ecosystem covering millions of creators, and growing subscription services like YouTube Premium and YouTube TV from zero to tens of millions of users. Known for 'inclusive leadership,' she was one of Silicon Valley's most influential female executives, actively advocating for workplace gender equality and paid parental leave. In February 2023, she stepped down as YouTube CEO to focus on personal health and family. In August 2024, she passed away from lung cancer at age 56.
