Thomas Kuhn
Creator of the paradigm shift concept who redefined the nature of scientific revolutions
Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996) was an American philosopher and historian of science, earning his physics PhD from Harvard before turning to the history and philosophy of science. His 1962 work The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is one of the most influential academic books of the 20th century, cited over 1.4 million times (as of 2022). Kuhn introduced the concept of "paradigm," describing scientific development as an alternating cycle of normal science (puzzle-solving within an established paradigm) and scientific revolution (paradigm breakdown and replacement by a new paradigm). His concept of "incommensurability" — that different paradigms cannot be directly compared — sparked profound debate in philosophy of science about the nature of scientific progress.
