Zhang Chaoyang
Pioneer of spiritual transformation from internet veteran to physics popularization communicator
Born in 1964 in Xi'an, Shaanxi, Zhang Chaoyang graduated from Tsinghua University's Physics Department and later earned a PhD in physics from MIT. He founded Sohu in 1996, one of China's earliest internet pioneers, building Sohu into one of China's first portal websites. After the internet bubble burst, he experienced years of depression and anxiety, later finding inner peace through meditation and mindfulness practice. After 2012, he gradually withdrew from the commercial forefront to focus on physics popularization, conducting 'Zhang Chaoyang's Physics Classes' on Sohu Video and Douyin, explaining quantum mechanics, relativity, and other frontier physics in accessible ways, accumulating a large following. His life trajectory has become a representative narrative of 'from anxiety to calm' spiritual transformation in China's tech community, influencing a generation of entrepreneurs seeking spiritual meaning after commercial success.
