Kazuo Inamori
Altruistic practitioner who redefined Japanese management philosophy with 'Respect Heaven, Love People'
Kazuo Inamori (1932-2022) was the founder of Kyocera and KDDI, revered as one of Japan's 'Four Management Saints.' Starting with almost nothing, he built Kyocera into a global precision ceramics giant, then co-founded DDI (later KDDI) during the telecom liberalization wave to break NTT's monopoly. In 2010, at age 78, Inamori was asked by the Japanese government to serve as CEO of bankrupt Japan Airlines (JAL) at zero salary, turning it profitable within one year — a miracle in corporate turnaround history. His core ideas include: the life equation 'Mindset × Passion × Ability'; Amoeba Management, which splits organizations into the smallest independent profit-and-loss units; a management philosophy with 'Respect Heaven, Love People' as the highest judgment criterion; and the Six Practices daily cultivation system. In his later years, Inamori became a Buddhist monk, weaving altruism and Buddhist wisdom into his management philosophy to form a unique 'heart-centered management' system.
Methodologies
- Amoeba Unit Design Method - Split the organization into the smallest independent accounting units of 5-10 people, each with an independent 'value added per hour' metric, turning everyone into a manager
- Life Equation Self-Examination Method - Use the three-dimensional framework of 'Mindset × Passion × Ability' to diagnose personal or team growth bottlenecks, prioritizing the improvement of mindset positivity
Key decisions and timeline
- Born in Kagoshima - Adversity is the best school for tempering the mind
- Joined Shofu Industries, Researched Precision Ceramics - 'Working harder than anyone else' is the fundamental path to changing one's fate
- Founded Kyoto Ceramics (Kyocera) - Writing altruism into company DNA is the most powerful long-term competitive advantage
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - The result of life and work equals the product of mindset, passion, and ability. Ability and passion each range from 0 to 100, while mindset ranges from -100 to +100. Even with maximum ability and passion, if mindset is negative (selfish, evil), the result will be negative. Therefore, a correct mindset (altruistic, benevolent) is the fundamental variable determining life outcomes.
- Belief 2 - Respect Heaven, Love People is Kyocera's management philosophy and Inamori's highest judgment criterion for all decisions. 'Respect Heaven' means acting in accordance with natural laws and cosmic order; 'Love People' means treating all people with an altruistic heart. Facing any management decision, Inamori asks himself: 'As a human being, is this the right thing to do?' This question itself is the highest standard of judgment.
- Belief 3 - Inamori believed that true competitive advantage comes from altruism — managing for employee happiness, customer value, and social contribution rather than self-interest maximization. Altruistic management unleashes employees' intrinsic motivation and creates long-term value that transcends self-interest. 'Striving for the material and spiritual happiness of all employees' is Kyocera's primary management purpose.
