Wang Huiwen
Meituan co-founder who built B-side product philosophy and backend management systems with engineering rationality
Wang Huiwen is Wang Xing's classmate from Tsinghua University and a co-founder of Meituan. As Senior VP, he led product and operations system building for core business segments including food delivery and hotel/travel. Known for strict engineering rationality and counter-intuitive product insights, he excels especially at B-side product design and backend management system construction. He retired in 2020 for health reasons, but the product management philosophy and organizational culture he built remain core assets of Meituan. In 2022, he announced an AI large model startup, which ultimately did not materialize due to health issues, reflecting his continued sensitivity to frontier technology.
Methodologies
- B-side Product Systematic Design Method - Starting from the merchant's core workflow, identify opportunities for digitization, standardization, and automation to build backend management tools that merchants truly need.
- Density-First City Expansion Method - When expanding local services businesses, prioritize building high-density networks in limited cities rather than rushing to spread across all cities.
Key decisions and timeline
- 1982 Born; Later Studied at Tsinghua University with Wang Xing - Co-founder trust comes from long-term shared experiences, not short-term cooperation
- 2010 Co-founded Meituan with Wang Xing - When entering a highly competitive market, execution capability and team quality are more important than business model innovation
- 2011 Led Meituan Product and Operations System Building During Thousand Groupon War - In an elimination competition, the key to survival is not being the largest, but having the healthiest cash flow and highest operational efficiency
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - The product experience users perceive is just the tip of the iceberg; what truly determines the ceiling of experience is the backend system capabilities behind it: supply chain, data processing, merchant management, and operations tools. Only by building a powerful backend can you continuously support frontend product iteration.
- Belief 2 - The internet industry overly focuses on C-end user experience while overlooking that B-end merchant tools and platform backend systems are the core for building competitive moats. Meituan's core competitive advantage is not its user app but the backend management systems and commercial data analysis tools used by restaurant merchants.
- Belief 3 - True engineering culture is not just about writing code, but applying engineering logic—systematic thinking, quantifiable verification, iterative optimization—to solve all problems, including product design, business operations, and organizational management. This culture is difficult to replicate and is the true moat of internet companies.
