Wang Xing
Serial entrepreneur who turned 'eating' into a super-platform using infinite game thinking, from Xiaonei to Meituan
Wang Xing was born in 1979 in Longyan, Fujian. After graduating from Tsinghua University's Department of Electronic Engineering, he went to study in the United States before returning to China in 2003 to start his entrepreneurial journey. He founded Xiaonei (one of China's earliest campus social networks), Fanfou (China's Twitter), and Hainei, all of which failed or were forced to shut down. In 2010 he founded Meituan, surviving the 'thousand group-buying sites war' through relentless execution, and through continuous S-curve leaps expanded from group-buying to food delivery, hotel booking, and in-store services, ultimately building China's largest local life services platform. Meituan merged with Dianping in 2015 and went public in Hong Kong in 2018, with a market cap exceeding HKD 1 trillion at its peak. Wang Xing uses the 'infinite game' framework to think about competition, the nine-square-grid tool to analyze markets, and long-termism to resist short-term temptations — making him one of the most strategically disciplined entrepreneurs in Chinese internet history.
Methodologies
- Infinite Game Competition Decision Method - Before every competitive decision, first ask 'is this a finite or infinite game' — finite games pursue winning, infinite games pursue continued participation; most business competition is an infinite game.
- S-Curve Leap Decision Method - Proactively lay out the next S-curve during the growth phase of the current business S-curve, identifying leap windows where 'current resources are reusable + new market is high-frequency and low-competition.'
Key decisions and timeline
- 2003-12 Founded Xiaonei, One of China's Earliest Campus Social Networks - Product validation succeeded but capital management failed, giving Wang Xing a deep understanding of the importance of fundraising pace and equity dilution control. This experience became an important reference for his later Meituan fundraising strategy.
- 2007-05 Founded Fanfou, One of China's Earliest Twitter-Like Microblogging Products - Policy risk is a systemic risk that cannot be ignored in Chinese internet entrepreneurship; social content platforms are especially vulnerable. This experience led Wang Xing to deliberately choose the lower policy-sensitivity local life services track for Meituan.
- 2010-03 Founded Meituan, Entering the Group-Buying Track - When choosing a track, look at the long-term strategic value of the track (local life infrastructure) rather than short-term market hype (Groupon concept stock bubble). This judgment gave Meituan continued growth space even after the group-buying wars.
Beliefs and mental models
- Belief 1 - Deeply influenced by James Carse's 'Finite and Infinite Games,' Wang Xing believes business competition is not about winning any single round but about continuing to participate in the game. The true strategic goal is maintaining one's own sustainability in the game, not eliminating competitors. This belief gave Meituan distinctive strategic composure in competition against giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and Didi.
- Belief 2 - Wang Xing's three major entrepreneurial pivots (Xiaonei → Fanfou → Meituan) and Meituan's multiple internal business expansions (group-buying → food delivery → hotel booking → in-store) all reflect a strategic judgment to proactively leap to the next S-curve while the current business is still growing. Waiting until decline to pivot is usually too late; the best time to leap is when the current business has just been validated.
- Belief 3 - Wang Xing positioned 'food' as the core entry point for local life services: high frequency (multiple times daily), essential (non-substitutable), and rich in scenarios (dine-in/delivery/groceries/supermarket). Entering through food delivery, building a delivery network, then extending to hotel booking, entertainment, and in-store services is the underlying logic of Meituan's platform strategy. Deep cultivation of food scenarios is Meituan's moat against competition.
